CS Video: Simon Kinberg and the Producers on the Future of the X-Men

X-Men: Days of Future Past is a 2014 American superhero film, based on the fictional X-Men characters appearing in Marvel Comics and on the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Directed by Bryan Singer and distributed by 20th Century Fox, it is the seventh film in the X-Men film series and the third X-Men film directed by Singer after 2000's X-Men and 2003's X2.

By now, you probably already know a lot about the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, including the general time-traveling storyline, based on the comic story of the same name. At the recent New York City junket, SuperHeroHype and ComingSoon.net got to sit down with screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg and his fellow producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Hutch Parker to talk about the idea of bringing back the old cast members as well as finally tackling the Sentinels and the "Days of Future Past" storyline. You can see what they had to say in the video player below.

As well as talking about the upcoming movie, Shuler Donner and Parker confirmed that X-Men: Apocalypse will be set in the '80s as previously reported and that it will follow the group introduced in "First Class" while also introducing the young Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm.

"Part of the beauty of this world is that it's not defined by a single character," Parker says in the interview. "It's actually a universe populated by the characters you've seen and have now been added and some you haven't. There's a tremendous latitude about who we bring in and who we feature film to film and now even moreso with the legacy of 'Days of Future Past,' we have a chance to revisit certain themes and ideas in new ways."

Kinberg talked about some of the possible things they could cover in the next film including how Professor Xavier began his School for Gifted Youngsters, the further transformation of Nicholas Hoult's Beast, as well as seeing how Mystique realigns herself with Magneto after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, essentially setting up the status quo of Bryan Singer's original 2000 movie The X-Men.

There's no word on whether we may see the likes of Quicksilver in the next movie, but Schuler Donner did talk about bringing Nightcrawler into X2, and had to say this about the long-anticipated Deadpool movie:

"Definitely, definitely. I think Deadpool will finally eventually, finally, be made, yes."

X-Men: Days of Future Past
opens nationwide on Thursday night, May 22. You can watch our previous interview with Hugh Jackman here and look for interviews with the rest of the cast later this week.

20 Awesome Things You Didn't Know About Disney's 'Frozen'!

Because love is an open door.

Yes, Frozen came out back in November and we are still talking about it, because it's become one of our favorite movies ever! Breaking the box office record of the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time is just one of this Disney giant's many accolades.

"Let It Go" remains on repeat during our morning commute and we're still pretty upset that talking snowmen don't actually exist. After breaking all kinds of movie and song records, Frozen the musical is up next!

Before Anna and Elsa hit Broadway, here are 20 things you don't know about this Academy Award-winning movie:

1. They modeled the reindeer, Sven, after Executive Producer John Lasseter's dog, Frankie! They actually brought in a real reindeer, but he just stood there and didn't move.

2. The crew got to tour Norway as "research" when they were designing the kingdom of Arrendelle. Coolest job ever.

3. Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Tangled make a surprise appearance in Frozen! When they open the city gates for Elsa's coronation, you can see the couple's backs toward the camera.

4. However, there are more Disney theories within the movie. Fans believe that when Elsa and Anna's parents left the kingdom, they were en route to Germany for Rapunzel's homecoming when their ship sank near Denmark. The second part of the theory is that the boat the parents were on is actually the sunken ship in The Little Mermaid. Where does The Little Mermaid take place? Denmark, of course. Disney can be so clever with their inter-weaving storylines.

5. Queen Elsa was originally supposed to be a villain. Thankfully they changed the story to make her misunderstood. The movie just wouldn't have been the same.

6. They approached Idina Menzel to play Elsa after hearing her audition tape for Rapunzel in Tangled.

7. Director Chris Buck has worked on animation for other Disney classics including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Oliver & Company, and The Rescuers Down Under.

8. The animators of the film will watch the voice actors perform their lines in the booth and study the faces they make while they act it out.

9. The co-director and writer of Frozen, Jennifer Lee, also wrote the screenplay for Wreck-It Ralph.

10. Did you notice there is a Mickey Mouse stuffed animal on one of the shelves at Wandering Oaken's Trading Post?

11. Elsa is the only Disney princess who isn't a teenager. Jennifer Lee said that she's 21. Anna is 18.

12. Josh Gad improvised most of Olaf's lines to make the producers laugh.

13.During the end credits there is a disclaimer about boogers! "The views and opinions expressed by Kristoff in he film that all men eat their own boogers are solely his own and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the Walt Disney Company or the filmmakers. Neither The Walt Disney Company nor the filmmakers make any representation of the accuracy any such views and opinions."

14. Frozen was the first full-length Disney (non-Pixar) movie to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

15. Frozen is the highest-grossing animated film in history beating out Toy Story 3. It has made over $1.07 billion and is still raking in the cash!

16. Jennifer Lee is the first female to direct a full-length Disney animated feature film. She is also the second woman ever to solely write the screenplay for a Disney film since Linda Woolverton wrote Beauty and The Beast in 1991.

17. The movie is based off of a Hans Christian Anderson story titled The Snow Queen, which was also the original title of the hit film before they changed it to Frozen.

18. Kristen Bell admitted that it had been a dream of hers to voice a Disney princess. She grew up watching The Little Mermaid and used to record herself singing all the songs. Like Menzel, Bell also auditioned to play Rapunzel in Tangled.

19. Anna is the only Disney princess to share a duet with the villain character.

20. The composer of the film, Christophe Beck, composed a bunch of movies you love including Bring it On, Just Married, Hot Tub Time Machine, Date Night, The Hangover Part 2, Crazy, Stupid, Love and lots more.

Mother's Day Movie Marathon: 6 Flicks to Watch With Your Mama

Mother's Day is Sunday, and if you've yet to think of something special to do for your mom, consider treating her (or your mother-in-law or the mother of your children) to a marathon of films that will make her smile, sniffle or sing. Be aware that you will not find classic tear-jerkers like "Terms of Endearment" or "Stepmom" on this list, because it's time to branch out!

Here are my six personality-specific picks for the movie-loving mom you want to celebrate. After you've picked which ones you're going to watch, search for the best places to watch them right here on Moviefone.

Gallery | Mother's Day Movie Marathon

1. 'Easy A'

For moms who were cool during adolescence (and/or still are): You might be wondering why a mom would want to watch a high-school comedy, but main character Olive (Emma Stone) has the kind of patient, funny mom (played to perfection by Patricia Clarkson) everybody wishes they had at 16. Rosemary is open about her own teen antics; is willing to listen -- really listen -- to Olive during her whole "Scarlet Letter" experiment; and she makes her kids and her husband laugh on a regular basis. For extra laughs, reminisce about the craziest thing you did as a teenager.

2. 'Brave'

For mothers of daughters: Pixar's Oscar-winning drama gives the term "mama bear" a literal meaning. Scottish princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) and her regal mother Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) don't see eye to eye about much of anything, especially the idea of young Merida picking an acceptable suitor. But when a curse turns the Queen into a bear, Merida finally learns to see things from her mom's point of view -- and vice versa. It's not a "Freaky Friday"-style body swap, but a story of mutual understanding, respect and trust that all mothers and daughters should be able to enjoy.

3. 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'

For mothers of sons: Plenty of women (and therefore moms) prefer sci-fi action thrillers to romantic comedies, and if your mom appreciates strong, kick-butt heroines who will do anything and everything to protect their kids, she will definitely relate to Sarah Connor (a ripped Linda Hamilton). While some viewers might only remember Hamilton's biceps, mothers will understand the motivation behind the washboard abs and blazing guns -- Sarah's need to protect tween son John against the very real cyborg threat from the future. Don't forget to tell your mom why she's as awesome as Sarah Connor.

4. 'Les Miserables'

For moms who break out into song: Yeah, yeah, I mentioned no tear-jerkers, but I'm breaking that rule for "Les Mis," because mothers who love musicals will: a) be thrilled you were willing to watch a three-hour drama with her, b) probably know most of the musical numbers already, and c) sympathize with Fantine's (Anne Hathaway) desperate need to provide food, shelter, and safety for her daughter, Cosette, even if it means giving up her virtue, and, eventually, her life. To lighten the mood, sing along with the epic numbers like "One Day More" or "Lovely Ladies" in your funniest Broadway voice.

5. 'Bend It Like Beckham'

For soccer moms past and present: Any mom who has hauled a mesh bag of soccer balls, a cooler of Gatorade and a minivan full of sweaty kids to and from soccer practice will love seeing Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra in this British comedy about two girls who just want to "bend it like Beckham," even though their mothers disapprove of their tomboyish pursuits. The scenes between the two girls and their moms (one who's afraid her daughter is a lesbian and one who's afraid playing soccer will ruin her family's standing in the Sikh community) are memorably hilarious.

6. 'Parenthood'

For moms with lots of siblings: Do you have a bunch of aunts, uncles, and cousins you grew up with? Do you have a single mom? How about a mom who has issues with her own mom and dad? Does your mom enjoy big-family comedies? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, your mom is likely to love Ron Howard's iconic 1989 family comedy "Parenthood." Even if you've watched it before, it's one of the best movies to make a "Mother's Day" tradition, because it shows the importance of a strong, connected family that can overcome obstacles big and small.

John Goodman, Ken Watanabe Are Autobots in Transformers: Age of Extinction

The next installment in the Transformers franchise is only a few months away, and yet there is still casting news to report for the movie. Michael Bay announced today that John Goodman and Ken Watanabe will provide the voices for two new Autobots in TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION. Goodman will play Autobot Hound and Watanabe will play Drift. I don’t think there is ever such a thing as bad casting when it comes to these two great actors, so this is all good from where I’m sitting.

Here’s the press release from Michael Bay’s blog:
HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 8, 2014) – Director Michael Bay has tapped John Goodman and Ken Watanabe to voice two all new Autobots in his highly anticipated film “TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION,” the fourth film in the global blockbuster franchise from Paramount Pictures. Goodman and Watanabe will join legendary voice actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker.

Goodman will play Autobot Hound, Watanabe will play Drift, while Cullen reprises his role as the voice of Optimus Prime, and Welker takes on another new character, Galvatron. “I am pleased to welcome two gifted and versatile actors, John Goodman and Ken Watanabe, to the world of Transformers,” said Bay. “And to reteam with Peter and Frank, who have brought Transformers characters alive from the beginning. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best voice talent in the business, and together we will introduce several exciting new robots to fans of the franchise around the world.”

Goodman is one of my favorite actors and it’s always a pleasure to see or hear him on the big screen. His work in MONSTERS, INC. and MONSTERS UNIVERSITY are proof enough that the man can take a role, live-action or animated, and make it his own. Watanabe can next been seen in GODZILLA, but you already knew that.

As Bay mentioned, rounding out the voice-over cast are actors John DiMaggio (Crosshairs), Mark Ryan(Lockdown) while returning is Robert Foxworth (Rathchet) and Reno Wilson (Brains).

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opens on June 27, 2014.

Jay Roach in Talks to Direct Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Yankees Wife Swap Film THE TRADE

Though Ben Affleck and Matt Damon haven’t appeared together onscreen in starring roles for quite some time, the duo have been trying to get another project off the ground. A few years ago, it looked as though the reunion would happen on a film based on the 1970s baseball scandal involving the swapping of wives between New York Yankees pitchers Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich. Titled The Trade, the idea was that Damon would direct and star opposite Affleck and Casey Affleck, but their busy schedules forced the project into limbo. Now it appears that Warner Bros. is reviving the project with a new director at the helm: Jay Roach.

Hit the jump for more, including what roles Damon and Affleck will fill in this new iteration of the project.

Per Variety, Recount and Meet the Parents director Jay Roach is in negotiations to helm The Trade for Warner Bros. Neither Ben Affleck or Damon are expected to appear in the film as actors, but they will still produce alongside Jennifer Todd. The most recent draft of the script was written by the Affleck brothers, based on an initial draft by David Mandel.

Though Affleck and Damon were unable to fit The Trade into their schedules as actors, they were still passionate about the project and pushed to find a director in recent weeks. Roach has experience both in high-concept comedy with films like Austin Powers and Dinner for Schmucks, as well as more politically tinged material like Recount andGame Change. It’s unclear what the tone of The Trade would be, but the central premise could really take it anywhere.

Affleck is currently gearing up to don the cowl as Batman in Batman vs. Superman and recently had to push his next directorial effort, Live by Night, back to 2016 in order to accommodate the shooting schedule of the DC Comics adaptation. With the recent news that Justice League will be shot back-to-back with the Man of Steel follow-up, he’ll be quite busy for some time. Damon, meanwhile, has yet to commit to his next feature.

The worst comic book movies since 2000

Worst Comic Book Movies

Comic book movies have potential to be great, but these seem only to exist to pass off as money-makers and big news rather than entertainment. Here is the worst comic book movies since 2000.

“Amazing Spider-Man 2” was released Friday. This summer will feature another “X-Men” movie and the first film debuting the whacky superheroes “The Guardians of the Galaxy.” Meanwhile, DC Comics is planning a “Superman vs. Batman” movie for 2016 and now talking about a “Justice League” movie for 2018. Comic book movies are a hot property right now, and it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

However, there has been a share of dud comic book movies over the past 15 years. Some sure-fire hits fell quite flat. For every successful “Dark Knight,” there has been a comic book movie that left no room for future sequels, forcing writers to reboot the whole series and start fresh. Here’s a look at five of the worst in recent years.

Hulk” (2003). Director Ang Lee is known for great films like “Sense & Sensibility,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “Life of Pi.” However, the famed director’s first foray into comic book films was a flat-out disaster. The Hulk didn’t appear until 45 minutes into the movie, as Lee focused far too much on dialogue and psycho-analysis. There was a shocking lack of action that left the target audience – pre-teen boys – squirming in their seats, bored by this talker. Also, the computer-generated Hulk looked terrible. Fans overwhelming rejected the stinker, as it earned an ugly 29 percent approval rating from general viewers at movie-tracking website Rottentomatoes.com.

Superman Returns” (2006). How awful was Brandon Routh as Super Man? It was so bad that nearly a decade later, the wooden, lifeless actor has still not starred in a major motion picture. Meanwhile, Kate Bosworth (who played Lois Lane) looked frail and thin and sickly. What happened to the strong, athletic woman who starred in the surfer film “Blue Crush” just a few years earlier? Bosworth’s career has likewise tailed off. The plot wasn’t good, and it certainly hurt that the writers decided that Lois Lane had such “loose morals” that she wasn’t sure if Super Man was the father of her son. Average viewers gave the film a sluggish 62 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand” (2006). Director Bryan Singer was superb in creating the first two films, but he didn’t do this third film, and it showed. The writers here decided to kill off popular characters Cyclops and Professor X. They also brought in a lot of villains that don’t exist in the comic books, which wasn’t popular with fans. With the choice to kill off the main characters, it made it impossible to move forward with a fourth movie. Instead, the whole series was rebooted with a prequel. Critics gave the film a 58 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

Spider-Man 3” (2007). There were too many villains, and too much going on. Tobey Maguire’s “aw-shucks” Peter Parker worked in the first two films, but his brief turn on the dark side in the third movie was an epic failure. When Parker started dancing in a club and courted new girl Gwen Stacey, most fans rolled their eyes and buried their face in their hands. Just like the third “X-Men” film, it felt like there was nowhere new to go, so the series was entirely rebooted at the beginning. Average movie-goers gave the film a dismal 51 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

Green Lantern” (2011). The green super-hero suit looked awful at times. The movie opened with too much back-story. Ryan Reynolds has turned out to not quite be the leading man that Hollywood wants him to be; he is a bit too much of a comic and not enough of an action hero. The story lagged and with the bad computer graphics, the movie fell far short of expectations. The film got a lackluster 26 percent approval rating from film critics at Rottentomatoes.com.

Frozen's Idina Menzel Told She's 'Over The Age' To Play Elpheba In Wicked Movie

Idina Menzel has said that she's been told she's too old to play the lead role of Elpheba in a movie adaptation of Wicked.

The hit stage show has been a continued long-running hit in both London and New York, as well as other locations around the globe - but it was Menzel who made the role so famous.

She starred alongside Kristin Chenowith as Glinda, although it seems like neither will be reprising the parts on the big screen.

Idina Menzel (WENN)
Speaking on Watch What Happens Live, she was asked if she'd been approached - and she joked: "Yeah, as the mother of Elphaba."

The Frozen 'Let It Go' singer added: "I would die to be in [the film], except I'm afraid Kristin [Chenoweth] and I… they told us we're a little over the age for that."

The film has still not been officially given the go-ahead, although Universal Pictures chariman Adam Fogelson last year described it as a high priority.

6 Movies We're Looking Forward to: May 2014

After a surprisingly strong past few months, the summer movie going season has finally arrived to (hopefully) crank the dial to 11. May is packed full of a wide variety of exciting releases, from the superhero blockbuster to the R-rated comedy – so much so that it’s hard to pick just one must-see film for the month.

Specifically, there are three films that rank very high not just on our most anticipated list for the month but also for the year, and that alone makes May a very exciting movie-going time. Whether or not those films will deliver is another thing, but that’s the beauty of the last days before summer: everything has the potential to be great.

So, without further ado, here are the 6 films we’re looking forward to in May 2014.

-The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Release Date: May 2nd)

No matter how fans may feel about the latest Spider-Man reboot, it’s pretty clear that Sony is doubling down on the Spidey franchise starting with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. If rumors are to be believed, ASM 2 will not only secure Spider-Man’s future by introducing upcoming villains and characters, but it will also set the stage for theSinister Six movie.

We’ll admit, though, that there were a lot of dangling concerns surrounding The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but our early preview of the movie helped squash a lot of those fears. The movie’s also already out in international markets and thus farreception has been mixed, but the general consensus is that Amazing Spider-Man 2is an improvement over the first film. North American audiences will find out for themselves very soon.

-Neighbors (Release Date: May 9th)

The Seth Rogen comedy has been a staple of the summer movie season for the last few years, and that trend continues with the release of Neighbors in early May. In this film, Rogen and Rose Byrne play new parents forced todo “battle” with the fraternity living next door – a fraternity that just so happens to be led by Zac Efron.

That premise in and of itself has the potential for Rogen-level hijinks, but early reviews of Neighbors peg the film as a genuine comedic treat. Perhaps it’s Rogen playing a more mature (if that’s possible) character, or maybe it’s the concept of dueling neighbors – whatever the case, Neighbors could be the comedic hit of the summer.

-Godzilla (Release Date: May 16th)

Ever since its brief tease back at Comic-Con 2012, Godzilla has been at their top of our must-see list. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) clearly loves the property and wants to do it justice, and he’s certainly helped make his job easier by populating the film with A-level talent. But really, the true appeal of Godzilla rests with the monsters.

While some of the other summer releases may suffer from overexposure, Godzilla has the benefit of underexposure. That alone makes the intrigue of seeing these relatively mysterious monsters go toe-to-toe that much greater. It also doesn’t hurt that what we’ve seen of the movie thus far looks compelling on multiple levels.

Admittedly, Legendary and Warner Bros’ other giant monster movie, Pacific Rim, did not win over domestic audiences, but the thinking is that a known property like this will have a better chance at success. Regardless, fan anticipation is very high for this one.

- X-Men: Days of Future Past (Release Date: May 23rd)

When it was first announced, X-Men: Days of Future Past seemed like the perfect idea. Combining the casts of the new First Class franchise and the old X-Men series was nothing short of a dream scenario for fans, and with original director Bryan Singer back on board it felt like FOX had big plans in place. In fact, the studio echoed that sentiment by announcing a follow-up to DOFP, X-Men: Apocalypse, well before the 2014 film even hit theaters.

But, a lot has changed since then, and expectations appear to have changed as well. Some trailers have drummed up a lot of excitement, promising a time-bending adventure that features the biggest superhero ensemble ever put to film, while other promotional materials, like the Quicksilver Carl’s Jr. commercial, have had the opposite effect. That being said, it’s hard to imagine missing out on such a big comic book blockbuster.

-Maleficent (Release Date: May 30th)

A big budget, live-action adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is easily one of the riskiest releases of the month. On the one hand, the film follows in the footsteps of Alice in Wonderland, which made a ton of money for Disney, and it has Angelina Jolie in a role she seems born to play, but the rumors surrounding Maleficent‘s troubled production suggest this could be one of those historic failures.

Or maybe the appeal of one of Disney’s most iconic villains will be enough to carry the movie to box office success. The world of Maleficent certainly looks unique, but will only get the movie so far. Either way, we’re curious to see how effects-artist-turned-director Robert Stromberg has brought this untold story to life.

-A Million Ways to Die in the West (Release Date: May 30th)

Seth MacFarlane is arguably one of the most polarizing figures in comedy: you either love him or you hate him. Thankfully (for him) enough people fall in the former camp, which should help A Million Ways to Die in the West do very well. It also doesn’t hurt that MacFarlane, who also serves as writer, director, and lead actor on the film, has surrounded himself with some quality talent in Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, and Neil Patrick Harris.

Although the creator of Family Guy is not very well versed in the live-action genre, particularly not as an on-screen actor, his showmanship is hard to overlook. Combine that with this overly anachronistic concept, and there’s the potential for plenty of clever laughs. And, if A Million Ways holds the same appeals as MacFarlane’s last film, Ted, it could end up making huge bank at the box office.

-Conclusion

Considering The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already doing great business overseas it’s safe to say the film has a decent chance of exceeding its predecessor’s performance at the domestic box office. But the bigger question is whether it will be the highest grossing movie of the month. To be honest, while we hope that Godzilla does well, chances are this is a two-movie race between Spider-Man and X-Men, with both showing strengths and weaknesses.

There’s also the potential throwdown between Neighbors and A Million Ways to Die in the West – two R-rated comedies geared at similar audiences. Will the ever-consistent Rogen beat out MacFarlane, whose 2012 film Ted is one of the highest grossing R-rated comedies ever? And what about Maleficent? Will Disney’s big budget, live-action gamble pay off? Those answers and more will be answered in about 30 days.

Once again, here are the 6 films we’re looking forward to this month:

May 2nd: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
May 9th: Neighbors
May 16th: Godzilla
May 23rd: X-Men Days of Future Past
May 30th: Maleficent, A Million Ways to Die in the West
