Top 10 scenes from 2014 Cannes International Film Festival's final days

Films that impressed the crowds at the Croisette, including Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher with Channing Tatum and Steve Carell.

 

However, it was Winter Sleep that came away with the biggest prize of all, the Palme D’Or. The filmruns three hours and was directed by acclaimed Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Jane Campion and the rest of the jury decided it was the best film they had seen in competition.

Julianne Moore won the Best Actress prize for her role in David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Starsand Timothy Spall won Best Actor for his performance in Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner.

Miller didn’t go home empty handed though. He won Best Director for FoxcatcherThe Wonders(Les Merveilles) won the Grand Prix and Xavier Dolan's Mommy and Jean-Luc Godard's Goodbye to Language tied for the jury prize.

While the festival is known for setting the tone of the awards season, it is also known for the Hollywood glitz and glamour that comes to the South of France. That continues into the finalweekend of the event. So, here are 10 great scenes from the last days of Cannes 2014.

Thurman and Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman appeared together frequently during the final days, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Pulp Fiction and attending the closing ceremony together.

 

The Jury

9. The jury that picked the winning films was lead by The Piano writer/director Jane Campion. The other members were Gael Garcia Bernal, Jia Zhangke, Sofia Coppola, Jeon Do-yeon, Nicolas Winding Refn, Leila Hatami, Carole Bouquet and Willem Dafoe.

 

Sophia Loren

8. The always beautiful Sophia Loren attended the closing ceremony.

 

Timothy Spall

7. British actor 
Timothy Spall won the Best Actor prize for Mr. Turner. He plays the title role, British painter J.M.W. Turner.

 

Adrien Brody

6. 
Adrien Brody helped give out awards during the closing ceremony.

 

Jane Campion

5. 
Campion, who lead the jury, expressed her opinion early during the festival about women in film. She suggested that there is sexism in the industry, noting, “It does feel very undemocratic and women do notice. Time and time again, we don't get our share of representation.” She remains the only woman to direct a Palme D’Or winner, when her The Piano took the prize in 1993.

 

Travolta and Preston

John Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, appeared at the amfAR charity event to raise money for AIDS research.

 

Jessica Chastain

3. 
Jessica Chastain attended the festival to promote The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, which won acclaim but came home without any awards. She stayed around for the amfAR charity event to raise money for AIDS research.

 

Marion Cotillard

2. 
Marion Cotillard also starred in a movie that got acclaim, but no awards. She appeared in Two Days, One Night, the new film from brother directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.

 

Palme D’Or

1. The Palme D’Or, or “Golden Palm,” is the top prize of the festival. This year, it went to Winter Sleep.
