Hot movies on Blu-ray/DVD March 18, 2014

American Hustle

Nominated for ten Academy Awards, David O. Russell's late '70s crime caper boasts an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence. It hits home video this week with a behind-the-scenes featurette and a number of deleted scenes.

The Black Stallion

Carroll Ballard's 1979 adaptation of Walter Farley's classic children's book series was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor (Mickey Rooney) and Best Film Editing (Robert Dalva).

A Brief History of Time

Errol Morris' 1991 feature documentary explores the life of acclaimed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and the rare disease that has left him debilitated. The film joins the Criterion Collection alongside new interviews with both Morris and director of photograph John Bailey.

Frozen

Walt Disney Animation's latest feature film has become a sensation the world over, bringing home Academy Awards for both Best Animated Film and, for Idina Menzel's rendition of 'Let it Go,' Best Original Song. Included among the set's special features is the animated Mickey Mouse short, 'Get a Horse!'

The Hidden Fortress

One of George Lucas' biggest filmic influences on Star Wars, Akira Kurosawa's 1958 adventure stars Toshiro Mifune as a general tasked with transporting a princess across dangerous terrain. Among the many features on the Criterion HD upgrade is a 2001 interview with Lucas about his directing idol.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Lon Chaney is Victor Hugo's gothic anti-hero in the Carl Laemmle-produced adaptation of Hugo's 19th century novel. Flicker Alley brings the 1923 silent to Blu-ray and DVD. Among the set's many special features is an optional audio commentary by Chaney scholar Michael F. Blake.

Kill Your Darlings

A virtually untold "origin story" of the Beats comes to life with Daniel Radcliffe starring as a young Allen Ginsberg who, beginning college, meets Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), a charismatic young man who is also soon arrested for the murder of a mutual acquaintance, David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall), in a story that heralded the beginning of the Beat generation.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Idris Elba stars as the late revolutionary in the direct adaptation of Nelson Mandela's autobiography. Among the film's special features is a feature-length commentary with director Justin Chadwick.

Reasonable Doubt

When Dominic Cooper's Mitch Brockden, a young District Attorney, flees the scene of a hit-and-run, Jackson's Clinton Davis is blamed for the crime. Although Brockden does what he can to help, his investigation soon reveals that the case goes much, much deeper than he ever suspected. Reasonable Doubt arrives on Blu-ray with a number of featurettes, interviews and about ten minutes of deleted scenes.

Saving Mr. Banks

Based on the true story of Walt Disney's relationship with Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers, John Lee Hancock's biopic stars Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson as the bigger-than-life personalities.

The Slumber Party Massacre

Amy Holden Jones' 1982 slasher is of particular note to the genre in part for its screenplay by feminist author Rita Mae Brown, making the final film a unique blend of satire and sincerity. Shout! Factory brings the film to HD for the first time with a variety of special features, including a feature-length audio commentary.
