1957 was the best-ever year for movies (and other surprising insights from IMDb)

Big data can answer a lot of big debates … like which episode of “Seinfeld” was the funniest. (Columbia TriStar Television Photo/Reuters)

Want to know which episode of “Seinfeld” was the greatest? Curious which year produced the best films? At one point in time, these types of esoteric queries fell firmly in the realm of bar debates and bickering critics. But thanks to IMDb — that massive compendium of cinematic trivia and ratings — we can at last quantify things like, say, the best move made in 1985. (Spoiler alert: It’s “Back to the Future.”)

This brilliant and vindicating insight comes courtesy Reddit, where “monoglot,” an enterprising user in the /r/movies forum, parsed tens of thousands of movie reviews to assemble a list of the movies that got the most perfect reviews for every year between 1894 and the present. (More on the methodology here.) Using a similar data set, monoglot was also able to calculate the “best” years for movies, as determined by the average IMDb score of that year’s most popular films. The winners were 1957, 1994, 1995, 1975 and 2001, in that order.

The highest-rated movies, in this case, aren’t always the most-acclaimed ones. Both “Lord of the Rings” and “Star Wars” score an unlikely hat trick. “The Intouchables,” a feel-good French flick about a quadriplegic that most Americans probably never saw, wins top place for 2011. Here’s the full list:

This isn’t the only interesting project to pull from IMDb data in recent weeks.GraphTV — a visualization tool by the software engineer Kevin Wu — charts the ratings of TV shows over different seasons. “Star Trek” mostly got better. “The Simpsons” mostly got worse.

And what about “Seinfeld,” you ask? It’s a tie between “The Contest” (season 4, episode 11) and “The Soup” Nazi (season 7, episode 6). Although, per the IMDb hive mind, all nine seasons are pretty hilarious.

20th Century Fox Releases Deeper Trailer For 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' [Watch]

It's been four months since 20th Century Fox has released any new footage for 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' but it seems the wait was worth it.

The new trailer, uploaded Monday, gives more context than just the dramatic music and forlorn gazes offered by the first trailer back in October.

This time round we get some spectacular action sequences, Professor X (Patrick Stewart)'s hefty narration about the extinction of mutants, lots more Jennifer Lawrence (who plays Mystique) — and even a fleeting line from Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage.

The film, a sequel of sorts to 2011's X-Men: First Class, will reunite dozens of former mutants including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Halle Berry.

Watch Trailer below:

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit theaters on May 23.

‘Mr. Peabody & Sherman’: 3D fun, pawsitive lessons for kids

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

A fast-paced 3D animated feature about a dog, his boy and a time machine, based on the series of cartoons from "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show." 82 minutes.

Movie Review:

At first it seems as though the animated “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” is derived from pretty thin source material: a series of five-minute cartoons from the much-loved “Rocky & Bullwinkle Show” about a genius dog and his geeky human son who travel back in time where they interact with famous figures — and the dog indulges a penchant for truly terrible puns.

But on second thought ... hmm. Dog is father to a boy. Plenty of opportunities there to explore the legal and social ramifications of an unusual interspecies relationship. An odious child-protective-services bureaucrat (voiced by Allison Janney) is determined to remove little Sherman (Max Charles) from Peabody’s custody. And a taunting girl classmate (Ariel Winter), who derides Sherman as a dog, must be made to see the error of her ways by tripping back in time with the boy in a WABAC Machine.

Oh yes, time travel! The space-time continuum will surely be warped and, uh, woofed — puns: they’re contagious — in that scenario.

Plus there are history lessons to be mined from the material. For instance, did you know that ancient Egyptian burial rites sometimes included human sacrifice and that mummification involved removing the internal organs and preserving them in objects called canopic jars? Educational!

“Mr. Peabody & Sherman” has all of that. And puns. Must have puns. Must have Peabody (“Modern Family’s” Ty Burrell), after a visit to the famed Trojan city, intoning, “If at first you don’t succeed, Troy, Troy again.” There’s plenty more where that came from.

Frantically paced by director Rob Minkoff (“The Lion King”) and making very effective use of 3D — Hey! Get that sword out of my face! — the movie will surely appeal to kids. Unfortunately, a not-insignificant part of that appeal derives from poop jokes. There’s a road-apple reference relating to the Trojan Horse. And when our heroes are ejected from the Sphinx’s rear, oh dear. Plus, there’s the scene set in the sewers of Paris where ... well, you get the idea.

Other jokes seem pretty harsh for young viewers. A guillotine sequence from the French Revolution and the gag about Egyptian funerary disembowelments leave a bad taste in the mouth.

But it all ends with hugs and sweetness — let boy and dog embrace — and if I had to guess I’d say a sequel is a distinct possibility.

Frozen

Walt Disney Animation's latest feature film has become a sensation the world over, bringing home Academy Awards for both Best Animated Film and, for Idina Menzel's rendition of 'Let it Go,' Best Original Song. Included among the set's special features is the animated Mickey Mouse short, 'Get a Horse!'

One of George Lucas' biggest filmic influences on Star Wars, Akira Kurosawa's 1958 adventure stars Toshiro Mifune as a general tasked with transporting a princess across dangerous terrain. Among the many features on the Criterion HD upgrade is a 2001 interview with Lucas about his directing idol.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Hall), in a story that heralded the beginning of the Beat generation.

Idris Elba stars as the late revolutionary in the direct adaptation of Nelson Mandela's autobiography. Among the film's special features is a feature-length commentary with director Justin Chadwick.

Reasonable Doubt

When Dominic Cooper's Mitch Brockden, a young District Attorney, flees the scene of a hit-and-run, Jackson's Clinton Davis is blamed for the crime. Reasonable Doubt arrives on Blu-ray with a number of featurettes, interviews and about ten minutes of deleted scenes.

Saving Mr. Banks

Based on the true story of Walt Disney's relationship with Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers, John Lee Hancock's biopic stars Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson as the bigger-than-life personalities.

The Slumber Party Massacre

Amy Holden Jones' 1982 slasher is of particular note to the genre in part for its screenplay by feminist author Rita Mae Brown, making the final film a unique blend of satire and sincerity. Shout! Factory brings the film to HD for the first time with a variety of special features, including a feature-length audio commentary.

Blu-ray Release: Saving Mr. Banks

Today, at March 18,2014, Disney is releasing the wonderful Saving Mr. Banks on Blu-ray & DVD, one of the best movies of last year. Brilliantly depicting the struggle that Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) faced when trying to convince author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) to sign over the film rights to Mary Poppins, this is a moving and entertaining film that provides a beautiful look at the deeply personal elements every writer puts into their work.

We all loved Saving Mr. Banks when we reviewed the film in theatres this past December, and our glowing consensus was:

“Fronted by brilliant acting from Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, with an excellent supporting cast and beautiful screenplay, Saving Mr. Banks is an entertaining and moving film that pays tribute to the legacy of Mary Poppins. **** (Out of 4)”

The Blu-ray includes deleted scenes and a “behind the scenes” featurette, as well as a video of the cast and crew performing “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” in tribute to composer Richard Sherman.

Saving Mr. Banks is 125 minutes and rated PG.

Summary:

When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise - one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

How to Backup Disney Copy-Protected DVD Discs for watching

This is a thorough hands-on review on the easy way to backup Disney Copy-Protected DVD Discs to external hard drive, so that you can watch them anytime as you like.

I like watching Disney movies so much, as the animated characters are cute in these films. Among all the Disney movies, I like Frozen (2014) best. And it is good news that this movie has been released in DVD. The best thing is, the sound track isn't half bad either, there is a reason why it has been number 1 for the last 4 weeks in the U.S. Here is my favourite song from the movie: Here

The story is very original, albeit loosely based on the 'Snow Queen' but tells a journey of two sisters who's differences pulls them apart but together again. I rarely see such good movies to which I will never get bored watching time and time again. This certainly will be added to collection of classics. The best thing is it's fantastic for all the family, whatever the age.

Above is a Disney movie lover who share her opinion about watching movies. For a good movie, you must wanna watching them again and again. However, we are sure most of you have suffered collateral damage when DVDs are mishandled. It’s recommended to make a backup copy for use, and store the original away for safekeeping.  As we know, because of Disney-copy protection, you can't do copying as easy as you think. Let's lean the details.

What is Disney X-project DRM?

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a series of access control or copy protection technologies to inhibit uses of digital content that are not desired or intended by the content provider.

Disney (The Walt Disney Company), as a well-known DVD releaser and publisher, applies DRM for copy right protection. It uses AACS to prevent HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. Accordingly, the latest released DVD disc by Disney (as well as by Paramount and Warner) usually has 99 titles and the DVD movie size is larger than 40 GB, which makes it almost impossible to make DVD copy and backup. Disney copy protection is widely used by famous film publishers such as Disney, Paramount and Warner.

How to Backup Disney Copy Protected DVDs?

Most DVD backup programs do not support decrypting Disney copy-protected DVDs, you might have met problem when dealing with the recently released DVDs - your DVD backup software crashed or worked out of order. It can be assumed your DVDs are applied with Disney copy protection system Disney's x-project DRM.

Here recommend you to choose a powerful tool for ripping DVD movies. Pavtube DVDAid is a professional program in making digital copy of DVD. It can also rip the latest DVD (Disc/Floder/ISO/IFO) and convert to various video formats for some popular smartphones and tablets as well as editing software. Simple interface and CUDA acceleration will bring you an easy but effective conversion. The following guide will show you detailed steps.

You can have the trial version to try all the functions firstly, and then download the retail version to install it. (Mac users go to get DVDAid for Mac).

Note: Please respect the copyright law in your country. It is illegal to rip or copy DVDs for commercial use. It is allowed to clone a copy of copyrighted material for your own use under the concept of Fair Use in most countries.

Convert/Copy Disney Copy-Protected DVD movies for a safe storage:

Step 1. Install Pavtube DVDAid on your Windows/Mac.

Step 2. Launch Pavtube DVDAid, and load your DVD movie from Disney DVD disc drive to the app.

Step 3. Click the “Browse” button to set output folder where you want to save the copied DVD movies.

Step 4. Hit the Copy the entire disc icon on the main interface and start DVD backing up process. It enables you to makes 1:1 copy of original DVD Disc without quality loss with all audio streams, subtitle tracks, extras, etc.

Note: You can find the "Directly Copy" option to backup DVD main movie without extras. It will support to backup 100% intact the DVD main movie with all multiple tracks preserved. And you will get one M2TS file for output.

Alternatively, you are suggested to choose "Common Video -> H.264 Video(*.mp4)" for putting DVD to an external drive for playback.

Click big Convert button on the interface and then you will get a conversion dialogue box to show the exact progress, like time left, estimated size, state and so on.
