6 Movies We're Looking Forward to: May 2014

After a surprisingly strong past few months, the summer movie going season has finally arrived to (hopefully) crank the dial to 11. May is packed full of a wide variety of exciting releases, from the superhero blockbuster to the R-rated comedy – so much so that it’s hard to pick just one must-see film for the month.

Specifically, there are three films that rank very high not just on our most anticipated list for the month but also for the year, and that alone makes May a very exciting movie-going time. Whether or not those films will deliver is another thing, but that’s the beauty of the last days before summer: everything has the potential to be great.

So, without further ado, here are the 6 films we’re looking forward to in May 2014.

-The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Release Date: May 2nd)

No matter how fans may feel about the latest Spider-Man reboot, it’s pretty clear that Sony is doubling down on the Spidey franchise starting with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. If rumors are to be believed, ASM 2 will not only secure Spider-Man’s future by introducing upcoming villains and characters, but it will also set the stage for theSinister Six movie.

We’ll admit, though, that there were a lot of dangling concerns surrounding The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but our early preview of the movie helped squash a lot of those fears. The movie’s also already out in international markets and thus farreception has been mixed, but the general consensus is that Amazing Spider-Man 2is an improvement over the first film. North American audiences will find out for themselves very soon.

Check out the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

-Neighbors (Release Date: May 9th)

The Seth Rogen comedy has been a staple of the summer movie season for the last few years, and that trend continues with the release of Neighbors in early May. In this film, Rogen and Rose Byrne play new parents forced todo “battle” with the fraternity living next door – a fraternity that just so happens to be led by Zac Efron.

That premise in and of itself has the potential for Rogen-level hijinks, but early reviews of Neighbors peg the film as a genuine comedic treat. Perhaps it’s Rogen playing a more mature (if that’s possible) character, or maybe it’s the concept of dueling neighbors – whatever the case, Neighbors could be the comedic hit of the summer.

Check out the trailer for Neighbors.

-Godzilla (Release Date: May 16th)

Ever since its brief tease back at Comic-Con 2012, Godzilla has been at their top of our must-see list. Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) clearly loves the property and wants to do it justice, and he’s certainly helped make his job easier by populating the film with A-level talent. But really, the true appeal of Godzilla rests with the monsters.

While some of the other summer releases may suffer from overexposure, Godzilla has the benefit of underexposure. That alone makes the intrigue of seeing these relatively mysterious monsters go toe-to-toe that much greater. It also doesn’t hurt that what we’ve seen of the movie thus far looks compelling on multiple levels.

Admittedly, Legendary and Warner Bros’ other giant monster movie, Pacific Rim, did not win over domestic audiences, but the thinking is that a known property like this will have a better chance at success. Regardless, fan anticipation is very high for this one.

Check out the trailer for Godzilla.

- X-Men: Days of Future Past (Release Date: May 23rd)

When it was first announced, X-Men: Days of Future Past seemed like the perfect idea. Combining the casts of the new First Class franchise and the old X-Men series was nothing short of a dream scenario for fans, and with original director Bryan Singer back on board it felt like FOX had big plans in place. In fact, the studio echoed that sentiment by announcing a follow-up to DOFP, X-Men: Apocalypse, well before the 2014 film even hit theaters.

But, a lot has changed since then, and expectations appear to have changed as well. Some trailers have drummed up a lot of excitement, promising a time-bending adventure that features the biggest superhero ensemble ever put to film, while other promotional materials, like the Quicksilver Carl’s Jr. commercial, have had the opposite effect. That being said, it’s hard to imagine missing out on such a big comic book blockbuster.

Check out the trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

-Maleficent (Release Date: May 30th)

A big budget, live-action adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is easily one of the riskiest releases of the month. On the one hand, the film follows in the footsteps of Alice in Wonderland, which made a ton of money for Disney, and it has Angelina Jolie in a role she seems born to play, but the rumors surrounding Maleficent‘s troubled production suggest this could be one of those historic failures.

Or maybe the appeal of one of Disney’s most iconic villains will be enough to carry the movie to box office success. The world of Maleficent certainly looks unique, but will only get the movie so far. Either way, we’re curious to see how effects-artist-turned-director Robert Stromberg has brought this untold story to life.

Check out the trailer for Maleficent.

-A Million Ways to Die in the West (Release Date: May 30th)

Seth MacFarlane is arguably one of the most polarizing figures in comedy: you either love him or you hate him. Thankfully (for him) enough people fall in the former camp, which should help A Million Ways to Die in the West do very well. It also doesn’t hurt that MacFarlane, who also serves as writer, director, and lead actor on the film, has surrounded himself with some quality talent in Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, and Neil Patrick Harris.

Although the creator of Family Guy is not very well versed in the live-action genre, particularly not as an on-screen actor, his showmanship is hard to overlook. Combine that with this overly anachronistic concept, and there’s the potential for plenty of clever laughs. And, if A Million Ways holds the same appeals as MacFarlane’s last film, Ted, it could end up making huge bank at the box office.

Check out the trailer for A Million Ways to Die in the West.

-Conclusion

Considering The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already doing great business overseas it’s safe to say the film has a decent chance of exceeding its predecessor’s performance at the domestic box office. But the bigger question is whether it will be the highest grossing movie of the month. To be honest, while we hope that Godzilla does well, chances are this is a two-movie race between Spider-Man and X-Men, with both showing strengths and weaknesses.

There’s also the potential throwdown between Neighbors and A Million Ways to Die in the West – two R-rated comedies geared at similar audiences. Will the ever-consistent Rogen beat out MacFarlane, whose 2012 film Ted is one of the highest grossing R-rated comedies ever? And what about Maleficent? Will Disney’s big budget, live-action gamble pay off? Those answers and more will be answered in about 30 days.

Once again, here are the 6 films we’re looking forward to this month:

May 2nd: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
May 9th: Neighbors
May 16th: Godzilla
May 23rd: X-Men Days of Future Past
May 30th: Maleficent, A Million Ways to Die in the West

‘Frozen’ Reclaims Top Spot in Home Video Charts

A surge of Easter shopping elevated several family titles in the home video sales arena for the week ending April 20, with Disney’s megahit “Frozen” returning to the top spot for the fourth time in five weeks. The animated film topped Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for three consecutive weeks upon its debut a month ago before being displaced by Warner’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” for a week.

The top new release, Universal’s “Ride Along,” debuted at No. 2 on First Alert and No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart, where “Smaug” dropped a slot to No. 2.

Another new release from Universal, the animated “The Nut Job,” bowed at No. 4 on both charts, while 20th Century Fox’s Ben Stiller comedy “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” came in at No. 6 on both charts.

Disney’s animated “The Pirate Fairy” took the No. 5 slot on both charts in its third week in stores.

Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week was topped by Warner’s “Grudge Match,” which was available early at Redbox kiosks rather than the usual 28-day delay for Warner titles. “Ride Along,” “Nut Job” and “Mitty” did not appear on the rental chart as they also are from studios that delay titles to kiosks for a month.
The only other new release on the rental chart was Anchor Bay’s “Philomena,” at No. 14. “Philomena” was No. 12 on the First Alert sales chart.

John Latchem is managing editor of Home Media Magazine.

The German Doctor- I measure and weigh what interests me

The German Doctor

“I measure and weigh what interests me.”

Swift shot: Based on the novel Wakolda, written by the film’s director Lucia Puenzo, The German Doctor slowly beats into a terrifying conclusion. Set in 1960 Patagonia, in the German Bariloche region, a reclusive doctor makes the acquaintance of a family rewinding their lives. Loosely based on actual events, as the facts are shrouded by mystery, the story serves as a lesson on trust and lost innocence.

Alex Brendemuhl portrays notorious Nazi doctor, Josef Mengele . . . often referred to as “The Angel of Death.” He is making his way through some treacherous roads and asks to follow a family with a young girl he becomes intrigued with, Lilith. She is very small for her age, feeble really, and he has it in his mind to help her blossom through the miracle of genetics. That would all be wonderful, if he wasn’t a complete monster. Lilith’s mother, Eva (Natalia Oreiro) and father, Enzo (Diego Peretti) are wary at first, but eventually develop separate trusts with the mysterious doctor.

This was Florencia Bado’s first film, and she plays the innocent, yet naively curious, Lilith exceptionally well. You can see her flirting with death, literally, and you aren’t ever quite sure if she knows just how dangerous her careless encounters with the doctor truly are. There is a very disturbing chemistry between the two characters that is hard to describe without seeing. It’s bone chilling.

As Mengele traipses along a web of locally hidden war criminals, he finds a way to seduce each of the main characters. Eva becomes pregnant, with twins, and he offers to help her along. To Lilith, he promises puberty. To Enzo, he even offers a contract making incredibly life like dolls that provide a creepy juxtaposition to the unnatural horrors in the film. Ultimately, Mengele is a spider, shedding his skin . . . for a time, while he tinkers around with another experiment, where Lilith’s family is his zoo.

Nora Eldoc (Elena Roger), one of the teachers at the German school, dances with death. She appears to be on to the doctor and is determined to see him captured by the Israeli intelligence network, Mossad. If you know Mengele’s fate, there are no twists in the story. Because this isn’t a Hollywood film, there are subtitles, and you are required to grasp subtlety and endure a deliberate pulse of panic.

The German Doctor is a story that will disturb you on many levels. While it is not a horror film, the story is horrific, because the events feel all to real. At least one of the characters, and history backs this, doesn’t escape the web of evil. Watch this one with the understanding that it won’t leave your soul anytime soon.

Parent Movie Review of Turbo by Southern Outdoor Cinema

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live as a snail? To take hours to simply get across the yard is a reality that Theo lives with on a daily basis. While none of the other snails in town seem to have a problem with blazing a single, slow but steady, trail across the yard, Theo refuses to settle for anything other than blazing fast speed.

Everyone deserves to be happy with their life and Theo expects nothing more, and nothing less. The only problem is that for Theo, the happiness that being able to zip from one spot to another would bring, is one that can never be…or is it? That is a question that remains on his mind through each and every passing day.

The fact that many brothers are complete opposites isn’t a surprise, especially since Chet (Theo’s brother) is exactly that. For Chet, happiness is simple because nothing would make him happier than to see his brother finally come to terms with who he really is…a slow, never-get-anywhere-fast snail. Unfortunately, Chet’s happiness is ultimately dependent on Theo’s disappointment so as it stands, neither brother will ever find true happiness.

It is absolutely amazing how even the impossible can become possible when it is least expected, and for Theo that’s exactly what happens. It happened on an ordinary day of the week (not that there were ever extraordinary days up until this day) while Theo was sluggin’ his way over to the highway to watch traffic zip on by. Somehow he manages to get a little too close to traffic, and finds himself rolling over the hood of a car (make that a very fast car) and right into the engine.

If that weren’t bad enough (or so it seemed bad at that particular moment), Theo ends up completely submerged in a luminescent liquid, only to be blown immediately out of the tailpipe. Theo chalks it up to more bad luck but doesn’t realize that his luck is about to do back-to-back, super-fast doughnuts before the day is over. You see, while submerged in the luminescent fluid (which just so happened to be nitrous oxide), Theo’s genetic code was completely altered. The fluid that he was submerged in was now running through his veins which would have Theo running, no flying, before the day was over.

So in the blink of a snail’s eye, Theo had gone from your ordinary slimy snail to your extraordinary, scarifyingly fast, blue-slimy snail. His dreams had become a reality and Theo was finally happy. However, Chet seemed to be unhappier than before Theo turned into Super Theo. Before the accident, all Chet wanted was to see Theo accept who he was…slow. Now that things have completely changed, all Chet wants is to see Theo slow the heck down and get back to normal.

The only problem is that for Theo, everything is finally normal, and the only thing that he is in a hurry to do is zip around town as quickly as possible. Well, that and to prove to his brother that even a snail’s dreams can come true. But in order to accomplish that task in full, Theo will have to make it all the way to the Indy 500 so that he can change history forever.

Positive Elements

There are several positive elements throughout the film, but the most obvious (or maybe not so obvious) would have to be the genuine love that Chet has for his little brother. This can easily be mistaken for a brother simply being a pain in the behind, especially in the beginning of the movie. In fact, the true concern that Chet has for Theo might not be noticed until closer to the end of the film.

There is another side to that positive element in that Theo genuinely cares for his big brother as well. In fact, he loves his brother so much that he would literally risk his life if it became necessary. And yes, it does become necessary when Chet gets grabbed by a very hungry crow that happens to be passing by one day. Theo takes speedy pursuit, risking it all just to save his brother.

That leads us to additional evidence of the family values shared between the brothers. As a consequence of the snatch-and-grab by the crazy crow, and the tremendously fast response by little brother, Chet and Theo end up stranded in a scary town quite a distance away from home. Once again, Chet’s genuine concern for little brother might be misunderstood, and taken, for him simply being overly sensitive about everything. The thing is, he wants nothing more than to protect little brother from anything that could be taken as a threat against him. Something about this new town seems to give Chet that uneasy feeling, and his “big brother instincts” kick in quicker than Theo can move.

While in the strange town, Theo gets to meet his human hero, Tito (a race car driver), and the two become friends. They come to realize that they have quite a few things in common and without realizing it, they help each other out tremendously. Their theory is “that is what friends are for”. Tito runs a taco stand with his brother, and they need a new idea for promoting the stand. Theo (and a few of the other snails) team up with Tito to help make that dream a reality. Teamwork is a strong theme throughout the film as well.

Another positive element is that of always striving for more, and never settling for anything less than your dreams becoming reality. They all seem to be really big on the idea that you should never give up, and should keep on trying until you succeed. Well, Theo is very big on that theory. In fact, he has a habit of hitting hypothetical brick walls which is typically followed up with him putting out 110% rather than giving up.

One of the final connecting points to this ongoing positive theme is actually initiated by Chet. In a nutshell, it runs along the lines of making the most of each day that we are given to live. Chet asks Theo, point blank, one day “What if you wake up tomorrow and your powers are gone?” It doesn’t take Theo but a second to respond with, “Then I’d better make the most of today.”

Sexual Elements

Many of the snails work in a tomato factory, and a few of them comment on one tomato in particular. They mention that, on a scale of 1-10, it is an absolute 10 (compared to other tomatoes, of course). They also blurt out, “Look at her” and “Nice curves!” Chet attracts a female snail, named Burn, who happens to enjoy racing just like little brother. Burn mentions her booty to Chet in casual conversation, and tells him that they should be a couple.

Violent Elements

The movie starts out with a very unfortunate accident between Theo and the engine of a very fast car. His trip through the engine is terribly uncomfortable looking. A jealous, fellow racing snail, named Guy, makes an attempt to strip Theo of his speed by running him over with a car. While we are on the subject of speeding cars, many of the Indy cars in the race become involved in terrible crashes.

A little boy on a Big Wheel gets very close to running Theo over. Theo has a very close encounter with the wheels of a passing car. He also sees his life pass before his eyes as he nearly gets shredded by a lawnmower one day. One of the snails gets choked and kicked in an attack by a very old woman.

The aforementioned crazy crow was actually a part of a much larger group of crazy crows who would constantly snatch snails up and carry them off to be eaten. They were looked at, by the other snails, as an unfortunate part of life that everyone would have to just deal with. Several of these crows get into a fight over Chet, but Theo zips to the rescue just in time.

Drug and Alcohol Elements

Highly caffeinated beverages are quite the problem these days, but many people compare them to a simple can of cola. Theo is originally hooked on them. He is under the impression that they can have the ability to give him super-fast speed if he drinks enough of them. There is a scene involving adults at a party who are holding brown bottles labeled “lager” in their hand.

Steroids is another problem these days among athletes. It is used to enhance their physical ability. Theo’s encounter with the nitrous can be easily compared to that of a steroid fix to enhance his much desired speed.

Conclusion

Turbo starts out on a note containing several lessons to be learned. Family, friendship and persistence are an ongoing theme throughout the film. Both brothers prove to care for the other more than they care for their own lives. It just takes a little longer to decipher Chet’s behavior, and see it for what it really is. The bottom line is that he is the big brother that anyone who has a big brother in their life should be lucky enough to have.

A strong emphasis is placed on the power of persistence. The “follow your dreams” theme is one that seems to have no end (or clear beginning for that matter). It is an attitude that pops up in Theo right from the start, and one that ends in much the same way. If there is even one, single lesson that should easily be taken from Turbo, it is that of doing whatever it takes to attain your dreams. For Theo, that meant getting up each and every time that he fell, and putting out even more effort after doing so (in order to keep from falling again).

All-in-all, Turbo is a fantastic movie that the entire family could easily enjoy together. Once you get past the tidbits of violence, there is a real gem to be found!

Pavtube Easter Biggest Discount: Save up to 40% on Blu-ray/DVD Ripper software

Description: Pavtube is offering Easter Day Special Discount for everyone who would like to create memories and save special moments by enjoying BD/DVD movies and HD Videos on Easter Day.

Easter Sunday 2014 is April 20 and it would soon arrive. What do people do usually on Easter Day? Many churches hold special services on Easter Sunday, which celebrate the Jesus Christ's resurrection after his crucifixion. Many people also decorate eggs. These can be hard boiled eggs that can be eaten later, but may also be model eggs made of plastic, chocolate, candy or other materials. It is also common to organize Easter egg hunts. Eggs of some form are hidden, supposedly by a rabbit or hare. People, especially children, then search for them. In some areas, Easter egg hunts are a popular way for local businesses to promote themselves or may even be organized by churches.

This year's Easter Day, people could not only keep their tradition to celebrate the Christian belief of Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead as usual, but also apply for a new way to memorize Jesus's sacrifice by sharing religious movies with friends and family members on mobile devices or streaming to TV via home network.
