Movie review: They Came Together doesn't come together

They Came Together,” a spoof of romantic-comedy conventions, is a one-joke movie, but it's a joke told well, by people who know how. Movie review: 'They Came Together' here.

They Came Together

In Movie Theaters: Friday, June 27, 2014 Limited

Director: David Wain

Cast:

Amy Poehler . . . Molly
Paul Rudd . . . Joel
Cobie Smulders . . . Tiffany
Christopher Meloni . . . Roland
Max Greenfield . . . Jake
Bill Hader . . . Kyle

Companies: Lionsgate Films

Storyline:

They Came Together begins with the kind of smarmy self-awareness that is more self-serving than humorous. On a night out with another couple (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper), Molly (Amy Poehler) and Joel (Paul Rudd) recount the story of how they got together. The pair preface their tale by defining themselves as typical rom-com characters: he “vaguely but non-threateningly Jewish,” she a hopeless klutz. For the first act or so of the film, most of the dialogue foregrounds generic tropes with a wink, like the thin connection between Molly as a local candy shop owner meeting Joel, high-ranking member of a candy conglomerate hell-bent on establishing a total monopoly.

The non-threateningly attractive, amiable Paul Rudd is an easy guy to like. Maybe even to fall in love with…unless he’s a corporate drone working for the ultra-behemoth conglomerate that’s about to put your quirky, independent candy store out of business! Then he’s just a dreamy boy you could fall in love with but you won’t, damn it! You just won’t!

Director David Wain likes him, though. He likes him well enough to cast him as the lead in every single one of his films, including his latest, They Came Together.

For the provocatively titled newest effort, Wain collaborates with co-writer Michael Showalter, who helped him pen another Rudd vehicle, the cultish gem Wet Hot American Summer. Where that film lampooned summer camp films, the latest effort sends up New York City rom/coms.

Both films are endearingly silly, insightful, packed with genuine talent, and loaded with laughs. Rudd is joined this time around by reliably funny Amy Poehler as maybe the love of his life, if they can get past that candy store thing and a couple dozen other hurdles.

Wain is not just after the big, obvious genre clichés, either – though not one is safe. He’s equally adept at uncovering small, overlooked crutches of the romantic comedy and skewering those, as well. So what went so wrong?

Nothing feels fresh, for starters. So many films have poked fun at romantic comedy clichés that the satire is stale. The humor is broad when it needs to be, targeted at times, and often very funny, but utterly and immediately forgettable.

Just as problematic is that the 83 minute running time feels bloated. Jokes are repeated so incessantly that they lose potency, and Wain’s film has trouble mocking the tired and familiar without feeling a little spent itself. It plays like extended sketch comedy, some of which is spot-on, though too much of it is filler.

With laughs to be had, sight gags galore, priceless cameos, an enviable cast and a quick run time, it’s hardly the worst way to spend a little time in the air conditioning. You know, since Wet Hot American Summer doesn’t stream on Netflix.

CS Video: Simon Kinberg and the Producers on the Future of the X-Men

X-Men: Days of Future Past is a 2014 American superhero film, based on the fictional X-Men characters appearing in Marvel Comics and on the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Directed by Bryan Singer and distributed by 20th Century Fox, it is the seventh film in the X-Men film series and the third X-Men film directed by Singer after 2000's X-Men and 2003's X2.

By now, you probably already know a lot about the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, including the general time-traveling storyline, based on the comic story of the same name. At the recent New York City junket, SuperHeroHype and ComingSoon.net got to sit down with screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg and his fellow producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Hutch Parker to talk about the idea of bringing back the old cast members as well as finally tackling the Sentinels and the "Days of Future Past" storyline. You can see what they had to say in the video player below.

As well as talking about the upcoming movie, Shuler Donner and Parker confirmed that X-Men: Apocalypse will be set in the '80s as previously reported and that it will follow the group introduced in "First Class" while also introducing the young Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm.

"Part of the beauty of this world is that it's not defined by a single character," Parker says in the interview. "It's actually a universe populated by the characters you've seen and have now been added and some you haven't. There's a tremendous latitude about who we bring in and who we feature film to film and now even moreso with the legacy of 'Days of Future Past,' we have a chance to revisit certain themes and ideas in new ways."

Kinberg talked about some of the possible things they could cover in the next film including how Professor Xavier began his School for Gifted Youngsters, the further transformation of Nicholas Hoult's Beast, as well as seeing how Mystique realigns herself with Magneto after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, essentially setting up the status quo of Bryan Singer's original 2000 movie The X-Men.

There's no word on whether we may see the likes of Quicksilver in the next movie, but Schuler Donner did talk about bringing Nightcrawler into X2, and had to say this about the long-anticipated Deadpool movie:

"Definitely, definitely. I think Deadpool will finally eventually, finally, be made, yes."

X-Men: Days of Future Past
opens nationwide on Thursday night, May 22. You can watch our previous interview with Hugh Jackman here and look for interviews with the rest of the cast later this week.

20 Awesome Things You Didn't Know About Disney's 'Frozen'!

Because love is an open door.

Yes, Frozen came out back in November and we are still talking about it, because it's become one of our favorite movies ever! Breaking the box office record of the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time is just one of this Disney giant's many accolades.

"Let It Go" remains on repeat during our morning commute and we're still pretty upset that talking snowmen don't actually exist. After breaking all kinds of movie and song records, Frozen the musical is up next!

Before Anna and Elsa hit Broadway, here are 20 things you don't know about this Academy Award-winning movie:

1. They modeled the reindeer, Sven, after Executive Producer John Lasseter's dog, Frankie! They actually brought in a real reindeer, but he just stood there and didn't move.

2. The crew got to tour Norway as "research" when they were designing the kingdom of Arrendelle. Coolest job ever.

3. Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Tangled make a surprise appearance in Frozen! When they open the city gates for Elsa's coronation, you can see the couple's backs toward the camera.

4. However, there are more Disney theories within the movie. Fans believe that when Elsa and Anna's parents left the kingdom, they were en route to Germany for Rapunzel's homecoming when their ship sank near Denmark. The second part of the theory is that the boat the parents were on is actually the sunken ship in The Little Mermaid. Where does The Little Mermaid take place? Denmark, of course. Disney can be so clever with their inter-weaving storylines.

5. Queen Elsa was originally supposed to be a villain. Thankfully they changed the story to make her misunderstood. The movie just wouldn't have been the same.

6. They approached Idina Menzel to play Elsa after hearing her audition tape for Rapunzel in Tangled.

7. Director Chris Buck has worked on animation for other Disney classics including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Oliver & Company, and The Rescuers Down Under.

8. The animators of the film will watch the voice actors perform their lines in the booth and study the faces they make while they act it out.

9. The co-director and writer of Frozen, Jennifer Lee, also wrote the screenplay for Wreck-It Ralph.

10. Did you notice there is a Mickey Mouse stuffed animal on one of the shelves at Wandering Oaken's Trading Post?

11. Elsa is the only Disney princess who isn't a teenager. Jennifer Lee said that she's 21. Anna is 18.

12. Josh Gad improvised most of Olaf's lines to make the producers laugh.

13.During the end credits there is a disclaimer about boogers! "The views and opinions expressed by Kristoff in he film that all men eat their own boogers are solely his own and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the Walt Disney Company or the filmmakers. Neither The Walt Disney Company nor the filmmakers make any representation of the accuracy any such views and opinions."

14. Frozen was the first full-length Disney (non-Pixar) movie to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

15. Frozen is the highest-grossing animated film in history beating out Toy Story 3. It has made over $1.07 billion and is still raking in the cash!

16. Jennifer Lee is the first female to direct a full-length Disney animated feature film. She is also the second woman ever to solely write the screenplay for a Disney film since Linda Woolverton wrote Beauty and The Beast in 1991.

17. The movie is based off of a Hans Christian Anderson story titled The Snow Queen, which was also the original title of the hit film before they changed it to Frozen.

18. Kristen Bell admitted that it had been a dream of hers to voice a Disney princess. She grew up watching The Little Mermaid and used to record herself singing all the songs. Like Menzel, Bell also auditioned to play Rapunzel in Tangled.

19. Anna is the only Disney princess to share a duet with the villain character.

20. The composer of the film, Christophe Beck, composed a bunch of movies you love including Bring it On, Just Married, Hot Tub Time Machine, Date Night, The Hangover Part 2, Crazy, Stupid, Love and lots more.

Mother's Day Movie Marathon: 6 Flicks to Watch With Your Mama

Mother's Day is Sunday, and if you've yet to think of something special to do for your mom, consider treating her (or your mother-in-law or the mother of your children) to a marathon of films that will make her smile, sniffle or sing. Be aware that you will not find classic tear-jerkers like "Terms of Endearment" or "Stepmom" on this list, because it's time to branch out!

Here are my six personality-specific picks for the movie-loving mom you want to celebrate. After you've picked which ones you're going to watch, search for the best places to watch them right here on Moviefone.

Gallery | Mother's Day Movie Marathon

1. 'Easy A'

For moms who were cool during adolescence (and/or still are): You might be wondering why a mom would want to watch a high-school comedy, but main character Olive (Emma Stone) has the kind of patient, funny mom (played to perfection by Patricia Clarkson) everybody wishes they had at 16. Rosemary is open about her own teen antics; is willing to listen -- really listen -- to Olive during her whole "Scarlet Letter" experiment; and she makes her kids and her husband laugh on a regular basis. For extra laughs, reminisce about the craziest thing you did as a teenager.

2. 'Brave'

For mothers of daughters: Pixar's Oscar-winning drama gives the term "mama bear" a literal meaning. Scottish princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) and her regal mother Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) don't see eye to eye about much of anything, especially the idea of young Merida picking an acceptable suitor. But when a curse turns the Queen into a bear, Merida finally learns to see things from her mom's point of view -- and vice versa. It's not a "Freaky Friday"-style body swap, but a story of mutual understanding, respect and trust that all mothers and daughters should be able to enjoy.

3. 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'

For mothers of sons: Plenty of women (and therefore moms) prefer sci-fi action thrillers to romantic comedies, and if your mom appreciates strong, kick-butt heroines who will do anything and everything to protect their kids, she will definitely relate to Sarah Connor (a ripped Linda Hamilton). While some viewers might only remember Hamilton's biceps, mothers will understand the motivation behind the washboard abs and blazing guns -- Sarah's need to protect tween son John against the very real cyborg threat from the future. Don't forget to tell your mom why she's as awesome as Sarah Connor.

4. 'Les Miserables'

For moms who break out into song: Yeah, yeah, I mentioned no tear-jerkers, but I'm breaking that rule for "Les Mis," because mothers who love musicals will: a) be thrilled you were willing to watch a three-hour drama with her, b) probably know most of the musical numbers already, and c) sympathize with Fantine's (Anne Hathaway) desperate need to provide food, shelter, and safety for her daughter, Cosette, even if it means giving up her virtue, and, eventually, her life. To lighten the mood, sing along with the epic numbers like "One Day More" or "Lovely Ladies" in your funniest Broadway voice.

5. 'Bend It Like Beckham'

For soccer moms past and present: Any mom who has hauled a mesh bag of soccer balls, a cooler of Gatorade and a minivan full of sweaty kids to and from soccer practice will love seeing Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra in this British comedy about two girls who just want to "bend it like Beckham," even though their mothers disapprove of their tomboyish pursuits. The scenes between the two girls and their moms (one who's afraid her daughter is a lesbian and one who's afraid playing soccer will ruin her family's standing in the Sikh community) are memorably hilarious.

6. 'Parenthood'

For moms with lots of siblings: Do you have a bunch of aunts, uncles, and cousins you grew up with? Do you have a single mom? How about a mom who has issues with her own mom and dad? Does your mom enjoy big-family comedies? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, your mom is likely to love Ron Howard's iconic 1989 family comedy "Parenthood." Even if you've watched it before, it's one of the best movies to make a "Mother's Day" tradition, because it shows the importance of a strong, connected family that can overcome obstacles big and small.

The worst comic book movies since 2000

Worst Comic Book Movies

Comic book movies have potential to be great, but these seem only to exist to pass off as money-makers and big news rather than entertainment. Here is the worst comic book movies since 2000.

“Amazing Spider-Man 2” was released Friday. This summer will feature another “X-Men” movie and the first film debuting the whacky superheroes “The Guardians of the Galaxy.” Meanwhile, DC Comics is planning a “Superman vs. Batman” movie for 2016 and now talking about a “Justice League” movie for 2018. Comic book movies are a hot property right now, and it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

However, there has been a share of dud comic book movies over the past 15 years. Some sure-fire hits fell quite flat. For every successful “Dark Knight,” there has been a comic book movie that left no room for future sequels, forcing writers to reboot the whole series and start fresh. Here’s a look at five of the worst in recent years.

Hulk” (2003). Director Ang Lee is known for great films like “Sense & Sensibility,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “Life of Pi.” However, the famed director’s first foray into comic book films was a flat-out disaster. The Hulk didn’t appear until 45 minutes into the movie, as Lee focused far too much on dialogue and psycho-analysis. There was a shocking lack of action that left the target audience – pre-teen boys – squirming in their seats, bored by this talker. Also, the computer-generated Hulk looked terrible. Fans overwhelming rejected the stinker, as it earned an ugly 29 percent approval rating from general viewers at movie-tracking website Rottentomatoes.com.

Superman Returns” (2006). How awful was Brandon Routh as Super Man? It was so bad that nearly a decade later, the wooden, lifeless actor has still not starred in a major motion picture. Meanwhile, Kate Bosworth (who played Lois Lane) looked frail and thin and sickly. What happened to the strong, athletic woman who starred in the surfer film “Blue Crush” just a few years earlier? Bosworth’s career has likewise tailed off. The plot wasn’t good, and it certainly hurt that the writers decided that Lois Lane had such “loose morals” that she wasn’t sure if Super Man was the father of her son. Average viewers gave the film a sluggish 62 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand” (2006). Director Bryan Singer was superb in creating the first two films, but he didn’t do this third film, and it showed. The writers here decided to kill off popular characters Cyclops and Professor X. They also brought in a lot of villains that don’t exist in the comic books, which wasn’t popular with fans. With the choice to kill off the main characters, it made it impossible to move forward with a fourth movie. Instead, the whole series was rebooted with a prequel. Critics gave the film a 58 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

Spider-Man 3” (2007). There were too many villains, and too much going on. Tobey Maguire’s “aw-shucks” Peter Parker worked in the first two films, but his brief turn on the dark side in the third movie was an epic failure. When Parker started dancing in a club and courted new girl Gwen Stacey, most fans rolled their eyes and buried their face in their hands. Just like the third “X-Men” film, it felt like there was nowhere new to go, so the series was entirely rebooted at the beginning. Average movie-goers gave the film a dismal 51 percent approval rating at Rottentomatoes.com.

Green Lantern” (2011). The green super-hero suit looked awful at times. The movie opened with too much back-story. Ryan Reynolds has turned out to not quite be the leading man that Hollywood wants him to be; he is a bit too much of a comic and not enough of an action hero. The story lagged and with the bad computer graphics, the movie fell far short of expectations. The film got a lackluster 26 percent approval rating from film critics at Rottentomatoes.com.

The German Doctor- I measure and weigh what interests me

The German Doctor

“I measure and weigh what interests me.”

Swift shot: Based on the novel Wakolda, written by the film’s director Lucia Puenzo, The German Doctor slowly beats into a terrifying conclusion. Set in 1960 Patagonia, in the German Bariloche region, a reclusive doctor makes the acquaintance of a family rewinding their lives. Loosely based on actual events, as the facts are shrouded by mystery, the story serves as a lesson on trust and lost innocence.

Alex Brendemuhl portrays notorious Nazi doctor, Josef Mengele . . . often referred to as “The Angel of Death.” He is making his way through some treacherous roads and asks to follow a family with a young girl he becomes intrigued with, Lilith. She is very small for her age, feeble really, and he has it in his mind to help her blossom through the miracle of genetics. That would all be wonderful, if he wasn’t a complete monster. Lilith’s mother, Eva (Natalia Oreiro) and father, Enzo (Diego Peretti) are wary at first, but eventually develop separate trusts with the mysterious doctor.

This was Florencia Bado’s first film, and she plays the innocent, yet naively curious, Lilith exceptionally well. You can see her flirting with death, literally, and you aren’t ever quite sure if she knows just how dangerous her careless encounters with the doctor truly are. There is a very disturbing chemistry between the two characters that is hard to describe without seeing. It’s bone chilling.

As Mengele traipses along a web of locally hidden war criminals, he finds a way to seduce each of the main characters. Eva becomes pregnant, with twins, and he offers to help her along. To Lilith, he promises puberty. To Enzo, he even offers a contract making incredibly life like dolls that provide a creepy juxtaposition to the unnatural horrors in the film. Ultimately, Mengele is a spider, shedding his skin . . . for a time, while he tinkers around with another experiment, where Lilith’s family is his zoo.

Nora Eldoc (Elena Roger), one of the teachers at the German school, dances with death. She appears to be on to the doctor and is determined to see him captured by the Israeli intelligence network, Mossad. If you know Mengele’s fate, there are no twists in the story. Because this isn’t a Hollywood film, there are subtitles, and you are required to grasp subtlety and endure a deliberate pulse of panic.

The German Doctor is a story that will disturb you on many levels. While it is not a horror film, the story is horrific, because the events feel all to real. At least one of the characters, and history backs this, doesn’t escape the web of evil. Watch this one with the understanding that it won’t leave your soul anytime soon.

Parent Movie Review of Turbo by Southern Outdoor Cinema

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live as a snail? To take hours to simply get across the yard is a reality that Theo lives with on a daily basis. While none of the other snails in town seem to have a problem with blazing a single, slow but steady, trail across the yard, Theo refuses to settle for anything other than blazing fast speed.

Everyone deserves to be happy with their life and Theo expects nothing more, and nothing less. The only problem is that for Theo, the happiness that being able to zip from one spot to another would bring, is one that can never be…or is it? That is a question that remains on his mind through each and every passing day.

The fact that many brothers are complete opposites isn’t a surprise, especially since Chet (Theo’s brother) is exactly that. For Chet, happiness is simple because nothing would make him happier than to see his brother finally come to terms with who he really is…a slow, never-get-anywhere-fast snail. Unfortunately, Chet’s happiness is ultimately dependent on Theo’s disappointment so as it stands, neither brother will ever find true happiness.

It is absolutely amazing how even the impossible can become possible when it is least expected, and for Theo that’s exactly what happens. It happened on an ordinary day of the week (not that there were ever extraordinary days up until this day) while Theo was sluggin’ his way over to the highway to watch traffic zip on by. Somehow he manages to get a little too close to traffic, and finds himself rolling over the hood of a car (make that a very fast car) and right into the engine.

If that weren’t bad enough (or so it seemed bad at that particular moment), Theo ends up completely submerged in a luminescent liquid, only to be blown immediately out of the tailpipe. Theo chalks it up to more bad luck but doesn’t realize that his luck is about to do back-to-back, super-fast doughnuts before the day is over. You see, while submerged in the luminescent fluid (which just so happened to be nitrous oxide), Theo’s genetic code was completely altered. The fluid that he was submerged in was now running through his veins which would have Theo running, no flying, before the day was over.

So in the blink of a snail’s eye, Theo had gone from your ordinary slimy snail to your extraordinary, scarifyingly fast, blue-slimy snail. His dreams had become a reality and Theo was finally happy. However, Chet seemed to be unhappier than before Theo turned into Super Theo. Before the accident, all Chet wanted was to see Theo accept who he was…slow. Now that things have completely changed, all Chet wants is to see Theo slow the heck down and get back to normal.

The only problem is that for Theo, everything is finally normal, and the only thing that he is in a hurry to do is zip around town as quickly as possible. Well, that and to prove to his brother that even a snail’s dreams can come true. But in order to accomplish that task in full, Theo will have to make it all the way to the Indy 500 so that he can change history forever.

Positive Elements

There are several positive elements throughout the film, but the most obvious (or maybe not so obvious) would have to be the genuine love that Chet has for his little brother. This can easily be mistaken for a brother simply being a pain in the behind, especially in the beginning of the movie. In fact, the true concern that Chet has for Theo might not be noticed until closer to the end of the film.

There is another side to that positive element in that Theo genuinely cares for his big brother as well. In fact, he loves his brother so much that he would literally risk his life if it became necessary. And yes, it does become necessary when Chet gets grabbed by a very hungry crow that happens to be passing by one day. Theo takes speedy pursuit, risking it all just to save his brother.

That leads us to additional evidence of the family values shared between the brothers. As a consequence of the snatch-and-grab by the crazy crow, and the tremendously fast response by little brother, Chet and Theo end up stranded in a scary town quite a distance away from home. Once again, Chet’s genuine concern for little brother might be misunderstood, and taken, for him simply being overly sensitive about everything. The thing is, he wants nothing more than to protect little brother from anything that could be taken as a threat against him. Something about this new town seems to give Chet that uneasy feeling, and his “big brother instincts” kick in quicker than Theo can move.

While in the strange town, Theo gets to meet his human hero, Tito (a race car driver), and the two become friends. They come to realize that they have quite a few things in common and without realizing it, they help each other out tremendously. Their theory is “that is what friends are for”. Tito runs a taco stand with his brother, and they need a new idea for promoting the stand. Theo (and a few of the other snails) team up with Tito to help make that dream a reality. Teamwork is a strong theme throughout the film as well.

Another positive element is that of always striving for more, and never settling for anything less than your dreams becoming reality. They all seem to be really big on the idea that you should never give up, and should keep on trying until you succeed. Well, Theo is very big on that theory. In fact, he has a habit of hitting hypothetical brick walls which is typically followed up with him putting out 110% rather than giving up.

One of the final connecting points to this ongoing positive theme is actually initiated by Chet. In a nutshell, it runs along the lines of making the most of each day that we are given to live. Chet asks Theo, point blank, one day “What if you wake up tomorrow and your powers are gone?” It doesn’t take Theo but a second to respond with, “Then I’d better make the most of today.”

Sexual Elements

Many of the snails work in a tomato factory, and a few of them comment on one tomato in particular. They mention that, on a scale of 1-10, it is an absolute 10 (compared to other tomatoes, of course). They also blurt out, “Look at her” and “Nice curves!” Chet attracts a female snail, named Burn, who happens to enjoy racing just like little brother. Burn mentions her booty to Chet in casual conversation, and tells him that they should be a couple.

Violent Elements

The movie starts out with a very unfortunate accident between Theo and the engine of a very fast car. His trip through the engine is terribly uncomfortable looking. A jealous, fellow racing snail, named Guy, makes an attempt to strip Theo of his speed by running him over with a car. While we are on the subject of speeding cars, many of the Indy cars in the race become involved in terrible crashes.

A little boy on a Big Wheel gets very close to running Theo over. Theo has a very close encounter with the wheels of a passing car. He also sees his life pass before his eyes as he nearly gets shredded by a lawnmower one day. One of the snails gets choked and kicked in an attack by a very old woman.

The aforementioned crazy crow was actually a part of a much larger group of crazy crows who would constantly snatch snails up and carry them off to be eaten. They were looked at, by the other snails, as an unfortunate part of life that everyone would have to just deal with. Several of these crows get into a fight over Chet, but Theo zips to the rescue just in time.

Drug and Alcohol Elements

Highly caffeinated beverages are quite the problem these days, but many people compare them to a simple can of cola. Theo is originally hooked on them. He is under the impression that they can have the ability to give him super-fast speed if he drinks enough of them. There is a scene involving adults at a party who are holding brown bottles labeled “lager” in their hand.

Steroids is another problem these days among athletes. It is used to enhance their physical ability. Theo’s encounter with the nitrous can be easily compared to that of a steroid fix to enhance his much desired speed.

Conclusion

Turbo starts out on a note containing several lessons to be learned. Family, friendship and persistence are an ongoing theme throughout the film. Both brothers prove to care for the other more than they care for their own lives. It just takes a little longer to decipher Chet’s behavior, and see it for what it really is. The bottom line is that he is the big brother that anyone who has a big brother in their life should be lucky enough to have.

A strong emphasis is placed on the power of persistence. The “follow your dreams” theme is one that seems to have no end (or clear beginning for that matter). It is an attitude that pops up in Theo right from the start, and one that ends in much the same way. If there is even one, single lesson that should easily be taken from Turbo, it is that of doing whatever it takes to attain your dreams. For Theo, that meant getting up each and every time that he fell, and putting out even more effort after doing so (in order to keep from falling again).

All-in-all, Turbo is a fantastic movie that the entire family could easily enjoy together. Once you get past the tidbits of violence, there is a real gem to be found!

“Endless Love” Review- Most highly anticipated teen romance movie 2014

Endless Love (2014) is the story of a privileged girl and a charismatic boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart.

Movie Info

Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) star in Universal Pictures' ENDLESS LOVE, the story of a privileged girl and a charismatic boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart. Directed by Shana Feste (Country Strong), the romantic drama co-stars Robert Patrick, Bruce Greenwood, Rhys Wakefield, Dayo Okeniyi, Emma Rigby and Joely Richardson. Scott Stuber and Pamela Abdy (Identity Thief) of Bluegrass Films are joined by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl) of Fake Empire to produce the film from writers Josh Safran (Gossip Girl), Feste and Schwartz. Inspired by the 1979 novel and 1981 film of the same name, ENDLESS LOVE will be released on Valentine's Day, 2014.(c) Universal

DETAILS
  • Release Date: Feb 14, 2014;
  • Rated: PG-13; Length: 105 Minutes;
  • Genre: Drama; With: Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde;
  • Distributor: Universal Pictures
  • Director: Shana Feste

Writers: Shana Feste, Joshua Safran, 1 more credit ?

Stars: Gabriella Wilde, Alex Pettyfer, Bruce Greenwood

In the summer of 1981, the movie Endless Love was two things at once, and they meshed together not at all, which is one reason the film was such a glumly gauzy and unsatisfying concoction. It was pitched to audiences as a steamy Brooke Shields heart-tugger, a movie that piggybacked on her brand following the outrageous success of The Blue Lagoon the summer before.

Upon filing into the theatre to watch this year’s most highly anticipated teen romance, “Endless Love,” I certainly was not expecting to see an Oscar-caliber film. However, I did anticipate the blindly romantic, 13-year-old girl in me to reawaken during the two hours I watched this film starring Hollywood newcomers Gabriella Wilde and Alex Pettyfer.

While the masses of actual 13-year-olds around me may have squealed in delight at the all-too-cliché forbidden love story, I was quite frankly disappointed. There was something tragically Nicholas Sparks about “Endless Love,” like a bad mashup of “A Walk To Remember” and “The Notebook.”

“Endless Love” tells the story of star-crossed lovers Jade Butterfield (Wilde) and David Elliot (Pettyfer) who fall madly, endlessly (if I dare be so corny), in love the summer after graduating high school. Jade is a beautiful, wealthy and intelligent girl, who has been sheltered by her father the past two years since the tragic death of her older brother, Chris, the family’s golden child.

While preparing to leave to spend her summer interning at a hospital before starting pre-med at Brown University, Jade begins to live the teenage years she lost due to her years of mourning through David, her former classmate from “the wrong side of the tracks.”

As Jade and David’s relationship intensifies, Jade’s father, played by Bruce Greenfield, goes to extreme lengths to ensure his “little girl” stays focused on achieving her dream (his dream) of going to medical school.

This classic tale of the princess and the pauper, unfortunately, is as cliché and corny as one would anticipate, with few surprises or unexpected plot twists. Frankly, the marital problems and complexities between Jade’s parents make for a far more interesting story than the love affair between Jade and David. Each person in the film has very surface–level characterization, examples being that Jade and David have virtually zero faults and Hugh is inherently evil.

“Endless Love” did have a few high points, one certainly being the excellent soundtrack playing throughout the film. The slightly off-beat, hipster tunes gave the timeless love story a more modern feel with tracks by groups such as NONONO, Tegan and Sara, Tanlines and more.

Another highlight of the film was Alex Pettyfer, who has certainly improved his acting skills since the clumsy effort put forth in 2011’s “Beastly.” Pettyfer shines in this film not only thanks to his boyish good looks, but also the sincerity and earnestness present in his words and actions in each scene. Though his character also has little depth, Pettyfer certainly embodies the traits of the all-American heartthrob.

Despite the major hype leading up to its premiere, “Endless Love” will probably fall short of most moviegoers’ expectations. The love scenes are just too corny and the comedic reliefs are painfully unfunny.

All and all, I’d suggest leaving “Endless Love” to the 13-year-old girls and saving the $9 ticket money for a more worthy cause.

Sometimes going back to the well is a good thing. About Last Night is an updated version of the 1986 film of the same name, which was based on a play.
